The BasilBar
The two smartly appointed rooms on the ground floor of Sweet Basil Thai Cuisine serve as a comfortable respite from the day, where you can stretch out on a plush couch with one of the bar's flashy signature cocktails and chow down a selection of flavor-bursting Thai appetizers. The 14-item happy hour menu features deliciously low-priced appetizers, hovering between $2-$4, with the purchase of a full-priced drink ($2.50-$7).
Hits: The Basil Crab Rangoon features crispy won tons wrapped around a delectable mixture of crab meat, basil and cream cheese, served with a tangy dipping sauce ($4). A coconut-fueled Tom Kah soup balances spice and herb in its fragrant broth ($3).
Misses: The food's cheap, but getting a couple of those irresistible cocktails can spike the bill quickly.

Basil Bar
Friday, February 04, 2005
Basil Bar On a drizzly Friday night in Northeast Portland, perhaps there's nothing more relaxing and satisfying than Sex With the Bartender in the basement of Sweet Basil's.
"Don't forget to say it's only six dollars," laughs Sweet Basil's proprietor, Supree Smithynunta, who recently opened Basil Bar, downstairs from his 4-year-old Thai restaurant.
Made with Tuaca, Cointreau, and orange juice, (and, of course, tons of love) "Sex" is the bar's best-selling cocktail.
"I wanted here to feel like home," says Smithynunta, whose warm green lounge is blessed with a giant screen TV, cozy tables, imaginative drinks and tasty fare (try a few plum-sauced lobster balls).
Though his nickname is "Boos" he doesn't actually imbibe. (Back in college, Boos was that most valuable of men on campus: the designated driver.)
Boos built his bar's bar, and often serves the food and mixes the cocktails.
The dude who doesn't drink sure takes care of those who do.
